Using the Sphero Edu Android App on Chromebooks

UPDATE (November 20, 2024):
Users can now choose between using the Sphero Edu Web App or the Android app on their Chromebooks. Each option has pros and cons depending on your school’s needs and your students’ devices. The information below reflects these new developments.

How Do I Get the Android Sphero Edu App on My Chromebook?

  1. Open the Google Play Store on your Chromebook. Look for this icon on your desktop shelf or via the Chrome OS app launcher:
    ![Google Play Store icon]

  2. Search for Sphero Edu in the search bar.

  3. Click Install to add the app to your Chromebook.

  4. Access the app from the app launcher. Optionally, pin it to your task bar shelf for quick access.

If you do not see the Google Play Store, your Chromebook may not support Android apps, or it may be a managed device with Google Play access removed.

Chromebook Guest Mode

To install the Sphero Edu app, your Chromebook must have a signed-in account. Guest Mode limits the ability to install or use most apps, including Android apps and Google Play. Administrators cannot deploy Android apps at the device level; deployment occurs at the user account level.

How Do I Manage and Deploy the Android Sphero Edu App in My School?

If your Chromebooks are managed by an administrator using Google enterprise or education tools, review the Chromebook section of our IT deployment guide for schools.

The guide covers:

  • Enabling managed Google Play for students and teachers

  • Deploying the Sphero Edu app to users

  • Additional permissions and settings that may impact app deployment and functionality

Which Chromebook Models Support the Android Sphero Edu App?

  • All Chromebooks manufactured since 2019 support Android and can run Sphero Edu via the Google Play Store.

  • Older Chromebooks may or may not support Android, depending on OS updates.

If your pre-2019 Chromebook appears on the official Android-supported list but the app doesn’t run, check for system updates.
