Sphero Edu Jr Firmware Updates

Most Sphero indi robots come from the factory with the latest firmware, ready to connect, drive, and program. However, some robots may have outdated or invalid firmware. In these cases, a firmware update - mandatory or optional - will be required through the Sphero Edu Jr app.

Mandatory Firmware Updates

When you connect to your robot, the Sphero Edu Jr app checks the robot’s firmware version against a required minimum. If your robot has:

  • Firmware below the minimum version, or

  • Invalid firmware

…you will be prompted to complete a mandatory update. This ensures your robot can function correctly with the app.

Optional Firmware Updates

Occasionally, optional firmware updates are released to improve robot behavior, performance, or fix minor bugs. These are not required for basic operation but are recommended to keep your robot up-to-date.

How to Check for Optional Updates

  1. Connect your robot to the Sphero Edu Jr app.

  2. Tap the gear icon in the top right to open Settings.

  3. Tap the triple gear icon to open Advanced Settings.

  4. If available, you will see a button labeled Update Robot Firmware.

Important Firmware Update Tips

  • Updates can take 1–5 minutes depending on your device and connection. Keep your device connected during this time.

  • Ensure your robot is fully charged. A depleted battery will interrupt the update and may leave the firmware invalid.

  • Do not power off, reset, or unplug your robot during the update.

  • Keep the robot within Bluetooth range throughout the process.

Device Recommendations

Firmware updates require multiple disconnects/reconnects and significant Bluetooth data transfer. Some devices may struggle with updates. Sphero recommends:

  • iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch

  • MacBooks

  • Google Pixel series Android phones

  • Samsung Galaxy S series Android phones

  • Amazon Fire HD 8 Tablets

If your device repeatedly fails an update, try using a different compatible device.

Firmware updates ensure your indi robot remains compatible, stable, and fully functional with the Sphero Edu Jr app.
