Sphero 1.0 and 2.0 Troubleshooting
Sphero Flashes Red: Firmware and Battery Guidance
If your Sphero is flashing red consistently, even though it is charged, this usually means the robot was interrupted during a firmware update. This is often caused by a weak internet connection when attempting the update. Follow these steps to ensure your Sphero’s firmware update completes successfully.
Preparing for the Firmware Update
-
Make sure your Sphero app is up to date and your robot is fully charged.
-
If your Sphero continues to flash red in the charger instead of going to sleep, press the button on the side of the charger to enter deep sleep, and allow it to charge for at least an hour.
Updating Firmware
-
Ensure you have an active internet connection (WiFi or 4G/LTE). Firmware updates require connectivity.
-
Connect to Sphero via the app.
-
Open the Sphero app. Your Sphero should start updating automatically.
-
If prompted that a firmware upgrade is available, select “Yes” to start the update.
-
The robot will flash orange while updating, and your device will display a progress bar. The update stops when complete.
Additional Tips
-
If updates fail repeatedly, try updating in a location with a stronger internet connection, such as an office, school, coffee shop, or friend’s house.
-
Before driving, aim your Sphero by placing your thumbs on the Nav Wheel in the app and rotate until Sphero’s blue taillight points directly at you. You can re-aim at any time during play.
Red Light Meanings
-
Quick red flash: The firmware needs to be updated.
-
Slow red flash: The battery needs to be recharged. If your robot is fully charged and still shows a slow red flash, the battery may have reached the end of its life.
Resolving Connection Issues
-
Ensure all Bluetooth devices within 50 feet are turned off or have Bluetooth disabled.
-
Place Sphero in the charger and press the side button to perform a hard reset.
-
Sphero should now blink its 3-color code and be ready to connect to your device.
