littleBits Classroom Tips
Establishing Good Habits
Before starting a lesson or unit with littleBits, set some rules with your class regarding setup and clean-up. Teaching students how to handle and store Bits properly will help keep your classroom organized and ensure the Bits last longer.
-
Show students how you would like them to handle the Bits.
-
Demonstrate how Bits should be organized for storage between lessons.
-
For lessons or invention challenges in progress, develop a procedure for labeling and storing prototypes (and Bits), so students can easily put away and access their inventions with minimal interruption.
The back of the Code Kit and the STEAM Student Set Invention Guides includes a map showing where the Bits fit into the packaging, which can help with organization.
Cleaning Bits
If Bits aren’t working as expected, try cleaning the bitSnaps (the magnetic connectors on the sides of each Bit).
-
Dry cleaning: Wipe them with a clean, dry cloth (a T-shirt works well).
-
Isopropyl alcohol: If dry cleaning doesn’t work, dampen a soft cloth with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol and gently wipe the connectors.
-
Do not use any other cleaning products on your Bits.
-
Managing Power
Every circuit students build will require a power source. Maintaining power is key to keeping your Bits working. Assign someone to check and replace low batteries regularly.
Signs of low batteries:
-
Low or flickering lights (especially when running motors)
-
Erratic behavior with the servo motor
-
Motors that won’t run
When batteries are low, recharge or replace them. USB power can also be used instead of 9V batteries.
Extra batteries: If you go through single-use batteries quickly, consider purchasing rechargeable batteries from a trusted brand like Duracell.
Encouraging Students to Speak Up
Sometimes students may be shy about reporting Bits that aren’t working or are damaged. Encourage them to:
-
Try basic troubleshooting first
-
Report the problem if it persists
Keep non-functional Bits separate from working ones, and contact our support team as soon as possible.
