indi Not Reading all Color Tiles

Why is my indi not responding to the Purple Card (or other colors)?

If indi drives over a card without performing the associated action, it is usually due to one of three things: low battery, a dirty sensor, or outdated firmware.

Follow these steps to get your robot back on track:

Check Power Levels

Ensure your indi is fully charged before troubleshooting. A low battery can reduce the sensitivity of the internal hardware, causing it to "miss" cards as it drives over them.

Clean the Color Sensor

The sensor is located on the undercarriage of the robot. Even a tiny amount of dust or a leftover piece of protective plastic can interfere with its "vision."

  • Inspect: Look at the bottom of the robot for any stickers, debris, or clear plastic film.

  • Dry Clean: Gently wipe the sensor lens with a dry, lint-free cloth (like a microfiber lens cloth).

  • Sticky Residue: If there is adhesive residue on the sensor, apply a tiny amount of isopropyl alcohol to your cloth. Dab the residue, then immediately wipe it dry with a clean section of the cloth.

Update the Firmware

Software updates often include "tunings" for how the robot perceives different colors.

  1. Open the Sphero Edu Jr app on your device.

  2. Connect your indi robot.

  3. Open the Connected Robot Panel.

  4. If the app prompts you for a firmware update, follow the on-screen instructions to complete it.

  5. If the issue persists, take a screenshot of the firmware version shown in this panel to share with support.

Still having trouble?

If you have cleaned the sensor and updated the firmware but indi is still not responding correctly, our support team is here to help.

To help us resolve the issue quickly, please contact support and include the following:

  • Firmware Screenshot: A screenshot of the firmware version found in the "Connected Robot" panel of the Sphero Edu Jr app.

  • Video: A short video of indi being placed on the specific tile (e.g., the purple card) that isn't working.

  • Affected Colors: A list of all the specific color cards indi is currently failing to recognize.
