Connecting Your Sphero Original (2011) or Sphero 2.0 (2013) Robot

This guide applies to the (2011) Sphero Original and (2013) Sphero 2.0 robots. For newer robots, please refer to the updated Sphero connection guide.

How Sphero Connects
Sphero Original and 2.0 connect using Bluetooth Classic, which differs from newer Sphero models. You must pair your Sphero through your phone’s Bluetooth settings before connecting in the app.

  • Your Sphero will appear as Sphero-___ on your phone’s Bluetooth list.

  • The three blanks correspond to the colors your Sphero flashes when first woken up. Example: ROB = Red, Orange, Blue.

  • When successfully paired, your Sphero will glow with a soft white light.

Common Issues Affecting Connection

  • Location Services are turned off

  • Sphero is already paired with another device (needs unpairing)

  • Sphero is not fully charged

iOS Pairing Instructions

  1. Remove Sphero from the induction charger

  2. Shake Sphero awake (a double tap usually works)

  3. Sphero will flash three consecutive colors when awake

  4. Open Settings > Bluetooth on your iOS device and make sure Bluetooth is enabled

  5. Wait for your device to detect Sphero. The name will match the flashing colors (e.g., Sphero-RYW = Red, Yellow, White)

  6. Select your Sphero to pair

  7. Pairing usually takes less than 30 seconds but may take up to 2 minutes

  8. Once paired, Sphero will glow white. Occasionally, you may need to try pairing more than once

  9. Open a supported Sphero app to connect

Android Pairing Instructions

  1. Remove Sphero from the induction charger

  2. Shake Sphero awake (a double tap usually works)

  3. Sphero will flash three consecutive colors when awake

  4. Open Settings > Bluetooth on your Android device. Depending on your device, this may be under Connections > Bluetooth or Settings > Bluetooth

  5. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled

  6. Wait for your device to detect Sphero. The name will match the flashing colors (e.g., Sphero-RYW)

  7. Select your Sphero to pair

  8. Pairing usually takes less than 30 seconds but may take up to 2 minutes

Note: On Android, Sphero will show as paired but will not glow white while paired. Occasionally, you may need to try pairing more than once. Once paired, open a supported Sphero app to connect.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • If Sphero does not appear in your Bluetooth menu, restart your device completely. This clears the Bluetooth cache and often resolves connection issues

  • Ensure your Sphero is awake and flashing its color code before attempting to pair
