BOLT+ Power and Sleep Modes

What happens when I power on BOLT+?

When you power on your BOLT+, it starts in Active Use mode once connected via Bluetooth. In this mode, the LEDs and display are fully usable. BOLT+ stays active until you disconnect, the battery becomes critically low, or the robot is inactive for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes of inactivity, it automatically switches to Low Power Advertising mode.

What is Low Power Advertising mode?

In Low Power Advertising mode, only minimal parts of the system are active. BOLT+ will:

  • Broadcast a Bluetooth signal so you can reconnect

  • Flash a single Bluetooth LED to show it’s connectable

If no connection is made within 3 minutes, BOLT+ automatically transitions to Shake to Wake mode.

What is Shake to Wake mode?

This is BOLT+’s lowest power state short of being powered off. In this mode, the robot is mostly shut down, but the shake sensor and charging detection remain active.

To wake BOLT+ from this state, you can:

  • Shake the robot a few times in a controlled way, or

  • Place it in the charger to trigger a reset

What is Power Off mode?

In Power Off mode, the robot is fully shut down — no LEDs, no Bluetooth, and no activity. The only way to restart is by placing BOLT+ in its charger.

You can power off BOLT+ by:

  • Requesting power off/deep sleep through the Sphero App or Web interface

  • Letting the battery drain to a critical level (the firmware will automatically power off)

What happens if my robot is inactive?

If BOLT+ is inactive for more than 5 minutes, it automatically switches to Low Power Advertising mode, unless:

  • It’s charging

  • A wakeup or sleep animation is playing

What is Reset in Charger?

The Reset in Charger function is a built-in safety mechanism. Placing BOLT+ in its charger will force a reset, no matter which mode it’s in.
