BOLT Modes
Sphero BOLT has 7 modes that help you understand what your robot is doing at any time. Familiarity with these modes ensures proper usage and care.
Off
-
This is BOLT’s default mode when it arrives in the box.
-
You cannot connect to BOLT until it enters SLEEP mode.
-
To transition to SLEEP: place BOLT on the charging cradle and let the light blue animation complete.
-
For long-term storage (4+ weeks): charge the battery to approximately 50%, then turn BOLT OFF via the Sphero Edu app or by using the cradle button.
-
BOLT in OFF mode won’t be discoverable by the app.
Sleep
-
BOLT is awake but not connected to any device.
-
This mode allows it to be discovered and connected via Bluetooth to a phone, tablet, or computer.
Cradle Removal
-
Activated when BOLT is removed from the charging cradle.
-
The robot displays its branding, battery level, and advertising name on the LED matrix.
Play
-
Active when BOLT is connected to the Sphero Edu or Sphero Play app.
-
In PLAY mode, the LED matrix displays drive screen colors or runs a program.
-
Exit PLAY mode by closing the app or selecting “Sleep Robot” in the app.
Charging
-
Occurs when BOLT is on the charging cradle with power connected.
-
Blinking blue lights on the cradle indicate charging.
-
Fully charged BOLTs show a solid blue light.
-
Charging time for a depleted BOLT is up to 6 hours, but partial charging is fine, and robots can remain on the cradle after full charge.
Firmware Update
-
Activated during firmware updates via the Sphero Edu app.
-
LEDs blink orange while updating (about 30 seconds).
-
Keep your device close to avoid disconnection.
-
Slow blinking red lights indicate an incomplete update. Fully charge BOLT and retry the update if this occurs.
Accidental Disconnect
-
Happens if BOLT goes out of Bluetooth range or the app crashes.
-
Front/back LEDs turn solid purple.
-
BOLT remains discoverable and will automatically return to SLEEP mode after 5 minutes.
