BOLT Features
Sphero BOLT builds on the capabilities of previous Sphero models (Sphero 2.0, SPRK, SPRK+) with new features, improved durability, and extended functionality. It is programmable, driveable, and extensible, with two drive motors, multiple sensors, and advanced LED lights.
Battery
-
Larger battery for all-day use in classrooms or home projects
-
Typical battery life: 2 hours (up to 5 hours with minimal driving)
-
Full charge time: 6 hours (compared to ~3 hours for previous models)
Lights
-
8x8 LED matrix capable of displaying colors, animations, scrolling text, and real-time data
-
Front and back RGB LEDs for added visual feedback
-
Fully programmable through the Sphero Edu app
Sensors
BOLT includes sensors found in previous models plus new ones for expanded functionality:
-
Light Sensor: Measures light intensity from 0–100,000 lux. Adjust programs based on your environment.
-
Infrared (IR) Sensors: Four IR emitter-receiver pairs for 360° awareness up to 4 meters. Used for distance, heading, and messaging between robots.
-
Compass (Magnetometer): Determines BOLT’s orientation on Earth, enabling programs based on real-world directions.
Auto-Aiming
-
Automatically aligns BOLT with your position using the internal compass and your mobile device’s magnetometer
-
Tap the compass icon in the Sphero Edu app and select Auto-Aim
-
Manual aiming is still available if preferred
-
Tips for best results:
-
Avoid large metal or magnetic objects
-
If needed, hold BOLT in your hand while using Auto-Aim
-
Compatible with most iOS and Android devices, not laptops
-
Driving and Programming
-
BOLT is top-heavy due to its LED matrix; maximum speed and acceleration are reduced for better stability
-
Programmable in Sphero Edu using blocks, JavaScript, or Python
-
Supports creative coding projects, storytelling, and real-world simulations
BOLT combines durability, programmability, and new features like advanced sensors, Auto-Aim, and an LED matrix to provide a rich educational and play experience.
