Accessing Sphero Edu: Web App vs Native Apps
You can access Sphero Edu and connect to your robots in two ways:
-
Sphero Edu Web App
-
Sphero Edu Native Apps
What’s the Difference?
Sphero Edu Web App
-
A website accessed directly from your browser.
-
Connect, drive, and program robots using Web Bluetooth—no installation required.
Sphero Edu Native Apps
-
Applications installed on your device.
-
Optimized performance and interface for each platform.
Should I Use the Web App or a Native App?
Consider the following:
-
Internet & Browser: Web App requires Chrome or Edge and a stable internet connection. Native apps work offline.
-
Program Storage: Web App stores programs in browser local storage, which can be cleared easily. Use accounts for storage or a native app for added security.
-
Deployment: Web App can simplify IT deployment—just allowlist the URL instead of installing apps.
-
Web Bluetooth Support: Not all browsers support it (Safari, Opera, Firefox do not).
-
Robot Compatibility: Web App only supports BOLT+, BOLT, Mini, and RVR/RVR+. Legacy robots require native apps.
Platform Recommendations
Platform | Best Option | Notes |
---|---|---|
Chromebooks | Web App | Easier deployment; Android app has Chrome OS limitations (guest mode, service channels). |
iPads & iPhones | Native iOS App | Web Bluetooth not supported on iOS; native app optimized for deployment. |
Android Tablets & Phones | Native Android App | Web App not supported on mobile browsers. |
Windows Computers | Depends on browser | Chrome or Edge: Web App; Other browsers: Native Windows App. |
Mac Computers | Depends on browser | Chrome or Edge: Web App; Safari or others: Native Mac App. |
Amazon Fire Tablets | Native Fire OS App | Web App not supported on mobile browsers. |
Summary
-
Use the Web App for Chromebooks or desktop devices with Chrome/Edge.
-
Use native apps for iOS, Android, and Fire OS devices, or if offline support is needed.
-
Ensure your browser and robot are compatible with the platform you choose.
